How the heck do people make money by being a blogger???
It doesn’t make a lot of sense to people! They say that blogging is just a scam and that just simple is untrue!
For one thing, blogging is a legitimate business! Yes, it is a super affordable way to start your own business because of how little overhead there is but that does not mean that there’s not a TON of hours that goes into the work!

Blogging is not something that you can get rich with in a matter of days, unless you are insanely lucky! No kidding! But there are a ton of different ways that a blogger can make money! So let’s just dive right into it!
This post may contain affiliate links. This means that if you click on one, I might receive a small commission, which is what helps keep TLM up, and running! I only promote products/services/companies that I use personally and believe in.
In my experience there are about 7 ways that a blogger can make money through their business.
- Affiliate marketing
- Creating courses
Boom baby! 7 ways that bloggers make money! Not just money but also consistent, passive, and lots (potentially! It’s all about how much effort you’re willing to put in!) of money! Now let’s dig into these a little bit closely!
Every blogger is different when it comes to placing ads onto his or her blog.
Some don’t like it because it can muk up the general flow of the blog and sometimes they just don’t look good! When ads are not placed properly they really can be just annoying!
However, for blogs that don’t have a lot of posts that are appropriate for sponsorship or affiliates then ads are the best way to actually make money!
My blog for example is primarily focused on personal growth. There is not a lot of room for finding products that coincide with that kind of niche so ads are the perfect way for me to be able to have an income!
Plus ads are a great passive income! Literally the only way that you can make money by simply applying for the program!
Ads don’t need a lot of upkeep because the agencies generally take care of that for you.
In blogging, I’ve come across three major players in the ad game.
- Google Adsense
I call them the baby step Ad company! They accept everyone! The payout is not astronomical but something is better than nothing!
There is no minimum that you need to worry about! They do pay on a click bases meaning that you only get paid when the user clicks on an ad. Kind of a bummer because that does take your user away from your site. Another reason that some bloggers don’t like ads.
This is a little in the middle road between Adsense and Mediavine. It’s another pay per click and a minimum traffic of 10,000 sessions per month (I believe! I may be a little off on the exact number.) but the payout is larger than Adsense.
Now if I had to recommend one over another, I would stick with Adsense only because Media.net has been known to take a little while to get the ball rolling!
You’ve probably seen this company so many times! A lot of blogs use this one and for good reason.
It pays the most!
Or at least from what I can tell they pay the best. There is a minimum of 25,000 sessions per month that needs to be met before the company will accept you. This is a pay per mile which means that they pay you for the people that show up to your blog and SEE the ad. There is not a need for the user to click into your ad which I LOVE!
My favorite way to make money as a blogger 🙂
How affiliate marketing works is this! You apply to an affiliate program > the company gives you a link > you talk about why you love the company or product > users click on the link and makes a purchase > YOU MAKE MONEY!
I love this way because it’s like recommending a great product to a friend! I always get a little swell of pride when someone buys from my links because I know that they’ve trusted me enough to take my word and actually buy something that I’ve recommended!
Affiliate marketing is also the way that most bloggers make their money! Not only that but many of them make WAY more than they made when they worked a full-time job!
Take Michelle for instance, she makes over $50,000 a month just from affiliate marketing! And she posts her income reports monthly so you know she’s not fibbing!
Michelle also created the course, making sense of affiliate marketing and because of her course, my affiliate income as tripled! I was kind of falling on my face when it came to this department! But through her course, everything has started to click and make sense! Michelle gives you so many actionable ways to start making money through affiliate marketing even with a small blog. She also gives you so many great free tools and resources! It’s absolutely worth the money!
My favorite affiliate marketing companies to get you started are:
All of these companies are great for accepting new bloggers! And each has thousands of different affiliates for any niche!
Another great way that bloggers earn a living is through partnerships with companies such as American Eagle outfitters, Toyota, Ziploc, Tarte, basically any company that you can think of! This works out because a blogger works out a deal that he or she will produce content centered around the product and will advertise it on his own! Sometimes email marketing, social media, a certain number of posts will be required just depending on the company and deal that is made out.
If this is the first time that your hearing the word freelancing then here is the definition, a person who works as a writer, designer, performer, or the like, selling work or services by the hour, day, job, etc., rather than working on a regular salary basis for one employer. So basically you’re the boss of what you do and what you charge and you’re an outsource to other companies. There are a lot of bloggers that freelance their writing skills, editing skills, or graphic skills. There are also a lot of other ways to freelance like services!
As a blogger, there are a certain set of skills that are unique to bloggers that you pick that are insanely beneficially to others! You can offer those services to others! Services such as blog coaching, email marketing, social media managing, Pinterest manager, and so much more! Maybe you have a really unique service that people don’t realize that they need! You can monetize that!
There are some seriously amazing course out there! Courses that have helped me and thousands of other bloggers work on a skill that has skyrocketed the success of their blogs. These are the same people who started at the bottom as regular people! They will tell you themselves that they didn’t come from any sort of digital background or anything like but found something that has worked so well for them that they gathered everything they know and put into a course which they turn around and offered to other people!
There is no reason why you can’t do the same thing! There are a bunch of different ways that you can deliver a course to someone! A lot of online platforms that are amazing!
Almost 80% of any course that I’ve taken as been on teachable! It’s a super easy to use and is easy for students to use! I unfortantly have only been on the student side of it so I’m not familiar with the process of creating a course.
Create your own site
I’ve used a couple courses where the creator opted to have a website created to house her course and I had no complaints! Just so long as it’s user friendly.
The last way that I’m going to talk about how bloggers make money is by writing their own ebooks!
Maybe you don’t want to create a course and have more of a conversational tone with your audience about whatever you want to share with them!
A lot of people think there is some huge elaborate planning that involves creating an ebook but it’s really not as daunting as you might think!
The average length of an educational ebook is 50,000 to 75,000 words which translates to about 153-230 pages. When you think about how long an average blog post is, 1500 words, and how long it takes you to write a single blog post, you can figure out how long it would take you to write an ebook!
For me, I can type out 700 words an hour so if I focused solely and writing an ebook, I could have written out in less than a week! Can you believe that?? Realistically, it doesn’t have to take a long time to create something of value to be able to sell to your audience!
Here are a couple articles on how you get to your ebook published!
PHEW!! We covered a lot of stuff today! There is so much that goes into blogging! I feel that as I get a handle on 2 or 3 things, 5 or 7 new things pop up!
However, it’s so rewarding! Financially and personally it’s amazing!
How did you think that bloggers make money? Are you surprised that there’s so many different options??
What’s your biggest problem when it comes to monetizing your blog??
