How can I beat my phone addiction

How can I beat my phone addiction

How do you feel about your phone?

Be honest! Is it simply a tool or a way for loved ones to keep in contact with you?

Do you want to know my favorite part of camping? Well besides the coffee!

My phone is useless! There’s no signal, no wifi, no social media, no nothing!

I absolutely love this time! I turn my phone off and stick it somewhere safe.

I actually get sad when we have to leave and I know that my phone will be on again.

This might be unusual for a lot of people especially now!

Smartphones are amazing!! I’m not downplaying how useful they are! My navigating skills are on point thanks to Dorris! (That’s what I call Google maps LOL)

But the reality is that we’ve simply become too attached to them.

I’m not sorry if this is offensive to you or if you think that I’m crazy.

Our society has lost so much connectivity and certain social skills, it’s insane!

We say let’s unplug so that we can reconnect and be with our families! When you’re literally sitting right next to them on the couch.

Communication skills are going out the door!

And I’m not pointing fingers here! I’m guilty of this too!

So what are the negatives of being on the phone/tablets too much?

1 // Disconnect

One of the biggest and most obvious side effects from too much smartphone use is no longer connecting with the people around us!

How often are we at the dinner table and everyone’s on their smartphones instead of talking to each other?

This is crazy! Our phones cannot give us love and comfort. They cannot make us laugh uncontrollably, sure they can provide access to videos that can but is it the same thing?

NO! It’s not.

2 // Anxiety

From both being with our phones or at least knowing where it is at all times.

As well as regular anxiety! Studies have shown that our mental health is related to our phones! And I definitely know that to be true from my own personal usage and experience!

Many people feel their anxiety goes up the more time they spend on their smartphones for a long period of time!

3 // Physical changes

Have you heard of bone spurs? Little horns being grown on skulls and the base of your neck? Yeah that’s from being on your phone with your head bent down at a 90 degree angle and holding your phone for too close and other things which you can read more on here

Not to mention eye problems are becoming worse and worse! More kids are needing glasses, chronic dryness is up, and even early cataracts are formed!

If we’re not careful, our phones will turn us into weird horned vegetables that can’t see!

These are just a few concerns but there’s lots more to see if you’re interested!

How to stay off of the phone more

Now I’m not saying that I’m some sort of digital nomad or expert but I have been able to be on my phone less and be more present!

1 // Boundaries

I have set up certain boundaries with myself that I try very hard not to break!

I don’t go searching for people’s accounts that would make me doubt how good my life is!

I don’t look at my phone for an hour after waking up as well as putting it away an hour before I go to bed!

smartphones are not allowed during dinner!

When I’m working, I only allow myself to look at my phone once an hour and I’ll put it in a separate space.

I also try VERY HARD to keep my phone lifted up so that my neck doesn’t get damaged, as well as keeping the phone and elbows length away from my face to prevent eye strain 😀

2 // Delete certain phone apps

I don’t have Twitter or Facebook on my phone, they’re just too distracting! I have also deleted some games that were sucking me in!

Yes, it was hard but it’s also been amazing! I don’t have the temptation an arms length away anymore!

And I’ve learned that those apps which I placed so much importance on don’t mean anything!

Yeah sometimes social media can be fun and have a few good benefits but the cost outweighs the good in my opinion. And so I ditched em! And I am not sorry!

3 // Set time restraints

I touched on this a little bit earlier but don’t be afraid to set time blocks that are meant only to be used for smartphone use! It works!

I’ve been loving waiting to use my phone because I don’t feel overwhelmed by it all the time.

Plus, it makes the time on the phone actually fun! Instead of just something to fill up my time.

4 // Take a break

Get out of cell service if you don’t think that you can turn your phone off without temptation.

I said before, that the reason camping is my fav is because I’m forced to not use my phone!

Getting those few days away to just be without is so amazing!

I feel so free without my phone and I love that no one else in my family can be attached to their phones. It’s the perfect way to reconnect with not just myself but with them as well. It’s great! Give it a try!

If you’re worried about anyone trying to reach you just give them a heads up. Let your mom or work or whoever! Know that you’re turning your phone off on purpose and if they want to reach you, they’ll have to wait or deal with snail mail!

Are there any benefits to smartphones?

Well yes! I would be crazy not to see some of the benefits that come with smartphones!

I love being able to call my dad whenever and wherever! He’s a truck driver so he’s on the road a lot.

I love being able to get cute pics of my little nephew who lives across the country.

I also love that my grandma can see updates of all her family just from Facebook.

I especially love the amazing things that can be looked up in any emergency! That I love more than anything!

Everyone else loves that I can’t get lost anymore, at least when I use Dorris! (My GPS LOL)

But I don’t love the obsession with smartphones and what we’re losing and could potentially lose if we don’t find a way to reconnect with the world around us!

I’d love to know if you agree with me about phone addiction or if you think that I’m totally crazy! Let me know below or email me at contact@tlmblog.com 😬

All the best,

Teya
