As I sit and write this post, the weather outside is gloomy and overcast and smelling of rain! One of the best things ever!
Basically the perfect formula for just sitting around drinking delicious hot things and reading a good book!
NOT the time for doing work!
I would love to simply sit back and allow all the work to just sit in the corner.
However, we all know that that’s not the way that our world works!
We usually always have obligations that require attention.
Or dreams and goals that we’re trying to accomplish!
I wish though!
What does it take to start being productive and stay that way all day??
How can I always be productive??
Well here’s your answer! Or well 11 of them 😆😆
In my opinion! These are the same things that I do EVERYDAY and I’ve never been better at getting stuff done!
1 // Get up early
Alright! Before I lose ya on the whole getting out of bed early thing, it’s a proven fact that successful people wake up at least 2 hours earlier than normal! Some even 3 hours!
Huffington post put together a great post on about a dozen widely considered successful people and what time they wake up and what they do with that time!
It’s really interesting to see! Because what they all have in common is that they wake up early and use that time wisely!
2 // Start with a good morning routine
A morning routine can make or break your WHOLE day!
Start with these somethings:
- Something that will you get moving
- Something you enjoy
- Something good for the house
- Something good for your goals
This way, even if the day does take a turn for the worst, you can rest easy because you got SOMETHING DONE.
3 // Actually start
Don’t just sit there staring at your computer, actually open it up and do something!
Create the snowball effect and just get cracking! Usually once you start, continuing is so easy!
4 // Remember that done is better than perfect
And if you’re a perfectionist or someone who uses perfection as an excuse not to work!
It is ALWAYS better to have something finished than something perfectly NOT done.
Recommended reads JUST for YOU!
5 // Focus on the outcome
A lot of times we get caught in the actual progress of something instead of the end result.
If you focus on the outcome, the process is easier to deal with.
6 // Do not multitask
For the sake of all that is good and holy…stop with the multitasking! Seriously! You’re not fooling anyone AND you’re simply hurting yourself.
It’s been proven that when you try to split your focus, everything loses its quality and it usually ends up taking longer.
So even though you feel like you’re doing SSSOOO much more by doing more things at a time, you’ll be producing a lower quality of work that took you longer to do anyway.
7 // Use deadlines
Enough of this “Oh I can keep putting it off because no one outside of me knows about it” nonsense!
Trust me, if you’re serious about your goals or even just want to improve how you work, deadlines are useful! Especially if you stick to them.
Deadlines give your project a sense of urgency that encourages you to keep working.
8 // Tackle the hardest task
Maybe this is why you’ve been so willing to keep putting things off.
You’re worried about dealing with that one task that you feel is going to just crush your soul!
JUST GET IT OUT OF THE WAY!
The best feeling is when you can finish the day and say I got that S.O.B done! I don’t have to worry about it again! And it’s such a relief knowing that it’s taken care of!
You’ll even get this great work high and be amazed at how much more you’ll be able to accomplish!
All because you get the hardest thing done first!
9 // Focus on the big 3
Alright, let’s say that you have a to-do list a mile long! Just thinking about it makes you weak in the knees.
I’ve had this same problem! I actually let days and days go by without getting anything done because I was so daunted by this huge list.
It wasn’t until I stripped that to-do list to the bone, prioritized, and stuck with the big 3 that I got everything under control and started being productive.
What I mean by the big 3 is this:
Take 3 items from your list that you figure need to get today and forget the rest!
Get those 3 things and either call it a day or move onto the next item!
3 things does not seem that intimidating.
You don’t have to worry about some huge list.
And stuff will actually be getting done!
10 // Work in 50/10
So I actually saw this first being used as a 25/5 which means focused work for 25 minutes and then a 5 minute break at the end.
This works great for some! But not for me.
I switched it to 50 minutes of work and 10 minutes of a break because at 25 minutes I just feel my rhythm being thrown off and
Plus, what kind of relaxing is there to do in 5 minutes?
At least in 10 minutes you can go to the bathroom, stretch, and grab a snack before starting work again.
11 // Remove distractions
I know that this sounds easy and I’m sure that you’re sitting there thinking,
I already do that, Teya!! Give me something new!
Well are you sure that you’re really doing it??
Think about it!
How many times do you stop to watch TV?
Check your social media?
Just pick up the phone for no reason at all??
I’m so bad about Youtube! It just sucks me in and before I know an hour has pasted and I haven’t gotten ANYTHING done!
There are distractions that we don’t even realize get in our way. They’ve just become habit!
- Practice self control and stick with the 50/10!
- No cell phone
- Move to a different room without direct vision to the TV
- No internet browsing – My biggest problem!
I think you get it!
I’m challenging you to have a pad and paper with while you’re working and anytime you notice getting distracted just mark a tally. See how many tallies you get in just a few hours! This is a great way to see just how focused you really are.
