What is collagen
Alright so word for word, from the magic of Wikipedia – Collagen is the main structural protein in the extracellular space in the various connective tissues in the body. As the main component of connective tissue, it is the most abundant protein in mammals, making 25% to 35% of the whole-body protein content.
Basically when you break it down, collagen is a huge part of what keeps our bodies help together because it provides strength to the tendons and bones. Giving our skin that famous elasticity and bounce!
Our bodies naturally start produce collagen on it’s own for a period but there does a come a time when our bodies slow down! Which is theorized as a reason to our aging and sagging period. Obviously! This is only a theory and I would like to take this time to disclose that I am not a skincare expert! I’m simply a girl who has a passion for health and I do lots of research but this does not replace a doctor. If you have any concerns please reach out to a professional!
Now while our bodies slow down on production around 25, there are supplements that we can add to hopefully improve our chances!
But is collagen simply a way to try to retain our youth? Heck no! There are a lot of different reasons that someone should take collagen outside of skincare.
- Joint lubrication
This was one thing that immediately made me want to try collagen! I’m not that old but that doesn’t stop my elbows and knees from giving me trouble! Collagen contains amino acids that may help to reduce joint pain and even swelling in joints! There is even a study that on osteoarthritis that had over 40% of applicants report a total remission on their pain just from adding collagen to their daily routine.
- Source of protein and fat loss
Naturally since collagen is a protein, it makes sense that anyone needing an additional way to add protein to their diets, this is a home run! Here is another study that shows a group who actually had more muscle built and fat loss compared to a group that didn’t take collagen. A huge reason in that may be because collagen contains glycine which is involved in the creation of creatine.
- Improved digestion health
I’m very excited at this part! I’ve always had a bubble gut, thanks genes! And collagen is supposed to strengthen the lining of the digestive tract. This could lead to an easier time going to the bathroom, bloating, and of course! Bubble gut!
- Anti-aging benefits
I believe that this is a huge reason that people hear about collagen and think that’s the fountain of youth! While I don’t believe that the fountain of youth claims can be confirmed, it is suggested that collagen is a key in keeping wrinkles at bay! While, keeping skin glowing and bouncy!

My experience with collagen
I have been taking collagen supplements for about 2 weeks now, a single dose mixed with my water throughout the day. I took Vital Proteins unflavored option which seemed like it would be a good place to start since it’s well rounded and I wasn’t sure what to expected.
Vital proteins claims that it’s a tasteless substance that mixes clear and can’t be tasted.
Well it’s kind of true, when I mixed the powder with my water, there were small pieces that didn’t mix well so I could obviously still see them. As far as a taste, I noticed a small aftertaste which could be my imagination since after reading many reviews, lots of others said that they experienced no taste!
While I notice a taste, when I add lemon or cucumber to the water I don’t notice anything!
What my body noticed
It did not take long for my body to start noticed the difference!
Particularly in my joints! When I workout, my knees and elbows give me a little trouble, popping and such but after trying this that has stopped! My arms and legs move way easier than before!
Adding collagen is also supposed to aid in digestion, you know keeping the pipes smooth…too much?? Well I’m here to tell you that that’s true! I’ll just let you take my word on that and won’t go into any gory details…
I was also very excited to see my face! My skin is more even and plumper! I’m not talking about in a fat way but in a way that shows vitality.
As far as my hair and skin goes, I’ll simply have to keep you posted! Since I have not seen much a difference as of yet in those departments which could be because I haven’t been taking the supplement long enough.
Overall, I am in love! I’ll definitely be taking collagen supplements for the rest of my life!
Next up, my mom will be taking a part in a little experiment to see how well the supplements work well for her. If you would like to stay up to date on that then head over to my instagram and hit follow! You’ll get regular updates there or you can subscribe!

Side effects of collagen
Aside from what I reported in my experience, other studies have reported the following:
- Certain collagen taken from marine life may cause an allergic reaction.
- Feeling too full.
From my experience, any collagen that i have seen made with fish is well known on the packaging so if you are allergic to fish than they are many other options for you!
As far as being too full, I see this as a possible good thing! If you’re someone who is trying to lose weight than being full is an awesome thing, right??
All in all, I am pro-collagen!
What are your thoughts?? Have you tried it before? If so, was your experience similar to mine? Leave me a comment below!
