Sunscreen. We hear em talk about it like it’s the holy grail or something…alright maybe not reverent but it’s taken very seriously and to be frank it is serious stuff! Sunscreen is the extra barrier that helps protect our skin from the major dangers of the sun.
Too obvious? Well let’s break it down! SPF means sun protection factor! If you didn’t know that! Cause I didn’t! I love my sunscreen. There is hardly a day that goes by that I don’t wear it! I mean it! Sun shining, over cast, raining, snowing! It doesn’t matter!
Part of the reason that I’m so fond of sunscreen is because I have a sensitivity to the sun and while others get sunburns, I break in hives! Plus a sunburn =( it is not a happy occasion!
Should this be the only reason that I use sunscreen? Why no! It’s not! In fact there are at least three reasons why everyone should wear sunscreen everyday!
- It’s one of the best ways to prevent early signs of aging.
- Melanoma is no joke.
- Preventing harmful UV rays will help with keeping an even skin tone.
So these are all pretty near and dear to my heart! Skin cancer runs in my family and not only that but wearing sunscreen, no matter who you are, cuts your risk of skin cancer by half! That’s pretty impressive!

So when it comes down to what I look for in a sunscreen, it adds up to this – texture, consistency, application, and look.
I’m pretty picky when it comes to my sunscreen because I use it everyday so I don’t want something that is going to leave my skin looking tacky or shiny. Plus, I want to have something that rubs in smoothly and quickly! I don’t want to have to sit there for 5 minutes trying to rub it all in! I look for those multifaceted workers! You know, those that will include moisturizer, anti-aging properties, or antioxidants.
Let’s look at my favs! Here are 6 sunscreens that I love!
Neutrogena is at the top of my list! It’s not crazy expensive and there are a wide range of different sunscreens that can accommodate anyone!
I love this one! It’s my go-to summer sunscreen that I use all over! The gel texture goes on amazingly! I don’t feel tacky afterwards! It does have a smell that can be irritating for certain skin types but for those who love added smells, it’s very tropical! Now I never noticed any breakouts when I used this product but my boyfriend who has oily skin did notice that he would begin to breakout if he used this for multiple days in a row.
This is my preferred under the makeup sunscreen lately! It absorbs nicely and actually leaves a nice satin finish! I love avoiding looking oily whenever possible! It’s fragrance free which of course leaves room for the sunscreen smell to be there and it is there! But after a little the smell goes away! It does have a lotion based feel which can sit a little heavy on the skin but this sunscreen actually isn’t heavy at all! I haven’t heard that it’s better for one skin type or another and I have combination skin!
I also love when I can find good sunscreen that multitasks!
Looking for a great triple threat? This anti-aging, moisturizer, sunscreen combo is perfect! It is a little bit more on the pricey side at nearly $25! Slightly kills me but it is worth it! It goes on smooth, not greasy, and doesn’t have a weird smell! Thankfully! I love the anti-aging properties as well! I’m getting those parentheses lines around my mouth (Insert gasp!) and this product is working wonders! I noticed a difference just a week or so after using it consistently. It’s a win-win-win!
Another fantastic anti-aging sunscreen is this Aveeno! I picked it up specifically because of the antioxidant rich formula! Antioxidants are key to add to your skincare routine because they help damage caused by free radicals.
I love this sunscreen because it’s helps even out my skin tone immensely! I also love the vitamins C and E in there! These vitamins are perfect for dry skin! My skin feels nice and light after using it.
When it comes to summer months, I want sunscreen that can also opt for my makeup!
If you know anything about First Aid Beauty, it’s that they take moisture very seriously! I’ve never found a product of theirs that dried my skin out! So when I was looking for a tinted all in one sunscreen that could replace my foundation, I immediately gravitated toward this little baby! It adds perfect coverage without feeling like my skin was being suffocated! There’s vitamin C here as well so my skin is getting an extra bit of something while blocking out the sun! It has a nice light texture that lets my skin breathe throughout the day!
I love Thrive causemetics! I love the company and the strives that they take to ensure that their products are made well without harming animals or the environment! And their CC Cream is to die for! Plus, they boast about protecting the skin from the blue light effects from computers and phones…I’m not sure how they do it!
It has a nice matte finish and since it’s buildable, YOU decide how much product it takes for your coverage! I only use a pump, maybe a pump in a half LOL just depending on the day! The coverage lasts all day which is fantastic! It’s not cakey at all and like I said, I love the satin finish that it leaves. It gives me that wonderful sense of being a little bit more put together without feeling like I just put on a bunch of makeup!
Some more sunscreen tips that shouldn’t be ignored!
- ONLY opt for sunscreen between 30 SPF and 50 SPF
Anything higher than that and you’re really just paying extra for nothing! Studies show that higher SPF don’t do anything for us! They provide a false sense of security that makes us believe that we can get away with wearing a higher sunscreen but only apply it once or twice throughout the day leaving vulnerable to actually getting sunburned!
- Avoid sprays
I like the idea that I can spray on some sunscreen, not worry about rubbing it in, and be on my way! The truth is though that we could miss big chunks of our skin when we use a spray! It’s difficult to get every inch when wind could change the direction or we just don’t know how to point LOL that’s my problem! Not to mention that most are aerosols which are very hard on the environment.
- Don’t forget to reapply
Now I don’t worry about reapplying when I’m in the house all day or during winter but when it’s hot outside then YES!! I make sure that I reapply it every few hours or whenever I feel my skin might be getting burned.
- Never ever think that just because it’s winter or overcast that you don’t need sunscreen
This is one of my biggest pet peeves! The sun still shines when it’s winter time! UV rays still get past clouds! 80% of harmful UV rays get through even the darkest clouds. Sun exposure can double during winter months because UV rays reflect and bounce off the snow. These aren’t just getting pulled from my butt either! There’s been more than study that tracks the effects damaging UV rays.
I love the summer months! It’s wonderful to be outside and experience new things! Just don’t forget to take care of your skin! Wear sunscreen and drink lots of water!
