Being grateful? It’s sounds like it should be a simple thing, doesn’t it? I mean we get asked what we’re thankful for and it comes pretty naturally. “I’m thankful for my family, a roof over my head, ECT”, but are we really practicing being grateful and showing gratitude in our every day?

You may be asking yourself, WHY?? 

Why should you or I be grateful when life can be so unfair? 

Life can be a nasty thing to be apart of but it can also be a wonderful thing. Being grateful is just one step and one way for us to work towards that path of that best life that we talk about here on TLM.

Being grateful is a state of mind that affects all aspects of our lives! No seriously! There are so many psychological reasons to practice gratitude! You’ll be more likely to no longer have as much resentment, jealousy, low self-esteem, and anger! You’ll even sleep better! 

I simply love being grateful! Anytime that I feel myself starting to get upset about a situation in my life (Like I’ve run out of dryer sheets which means I have to leave the house UGH!) I pause and think, is this really worth getting upset about? My life could be in a worse state! Not only that but did you know that being grateful is actually a sign of worship? No lie! God loves it when we thank for all the blessings that we already have instead of whining at Him for the things that we want or would rather have. (Found this out in, Hebrews 12:28)

I simply love being grateful! It is one of the best things that I’ve added to my routine to live my best life. I notice in my own personal life that I’m not just happier but I feel more joy. My life isn’t magically fixed! But I know that whatever I’m upset about isn’t a permament state.

Anytime that I feel myself starting to get upset about a situation in my life (Like I’ve run out of dryer sheets which means I have to leave the house UGH!) I pause and think, is this really worth getting upset about? My life could be way worse!

Not only that but did you know that being grateful is actually a sign of worship? No lie! God loves it when we thank for all the blessings that we already have instead of whining at Him for the things that we want or would rather have. (Found this out in, Hebrews 12:28)

Once, we start expressing it we see all of the wonderful things in our lives! The Bible talks about gratitude like “The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me;to one who orders his way rightly
I will show the salvation of God!” Psalm 50:23

What is being talked about here is that even in the face of hard times be grateful! Not only is this pleasing to God but it will also open our eyes even more to the wonderful things in our lives. (P.S. there are WAY more verses on gratitude in the Bible. I just chose that one since we’re talking about being grateful when we don’t really feel like it.)

How are some ways that we can practice being grateful?

It’s not just about just thinking about it and hoping that something will change! As with everything worth having it takes some hard work!

Write it down

Anytime that you feel a great sense of gratitude, write it down! You can place it into a jar or something that you can look at later when you need. Some people actually pull them at the end of the year to go over them!

Say it out loud

This one is especially helpful if you’re getting angry. I find that when I’m driving and getting road rage (Like who doesn’t??) I say three things that I’m grateful for. I’ll also throw in some ways that it could be worse and find myself much better after that.

Recite affirmations

Affirmations have a great effect on us! Whoever said that there is no power in words is INSANE!! Check out this post where I talk all about the good things of affirmations!

Here are several grateful affirmations that you can use!

  • I have gratitude for my life today
  • I always receive exactly what I need and I am grateful
  • I am blessed
  • I am thankful for all of my friends and family (and pets if you have em!)
  • I am thankful for the air in my lungs today
  • I am grateful for the health that I have (Even if you aren’t the healthiest, things could be worse. I mean you might not be able to read this at one point)
  • I am happy for this opportunity today
  • Any obstacles that come my way today are manageable
  • I am grateful for…(Insert whatever here! I usually say my home because it can be so cold here and I never want to take my warmth for granted)
  • This is the day that I will be grateful for

 Here are some tips for you to get the most out of your affirmations!

  1. Recite these to yourself in front of a mirror – It’s much easier for you to believe them if you feel like your talking to another person. 
  2. Tell them to yourself in the morning – This is simply a personal preference but I’ve found that when I say them in the morning, it’s much more likely that they’ll be in the forefront of my mind all day. 
  3. Say at three at a time – There is a reason for this! It’s all about how you think about it. The first time that you say it, it opens your mind and heart up, the second time is for focus and finding actionable parts of your day that you can use the affirmation, and the third time is for reinforcement so that you really get the full effect!

Give some gratitude to someone else

Call your mom, send a note to your best friend, or cook dinner for your significant other without any reference to you! Make it all about them! 

Set up an inspiration board with grateful quotes

We are very visual creatures! Having a pretty printable in our field of vision throughout our day helps give us that little reminder that we all need sometimes.

Change your perspective

Every time you feel annoyed or frustrated, think about how you can be grateful instead. Turn the negative into a positive situation by comparing your situation to a worse situation or think of at least three things that you can immediately be grateful for.

For example, if I’m standing in a long line at the grocery store and I’m getting frustrated, I think about how grateful I am that I have comfortable shoes on my feet, a reliable car to get me from place to place, and the accessibility to not only an abundance of fresh food but more than choices than might be necessary.

Start a gratitude journal 

Now this is one that I don’t personally do because I’m not much of a journaller (Is that a word??) but after reading several other posts of gratitude this suggestion popped up a lot! Here are a couple of those posts that you can take a look at if you like! Here or here.

Have others ask you

Keep yourself on your toes and have friends or family randomly ask you what you’re grateful for!

It’s really fun to just randomly have to come up with something that you’re truly grateful for! 

Express compliments to others genuinely

Allow yourself to express how much you like something to someone without feeling jealousy about it.

I’ve said so many times before but comparison is thief!

Giving someone that compliment not only gives him or her a sense of joy but it’ll give you some as well because of their reaction! We really don’t expect it from people to notice anything about us so when you tell someone something awesome, their reaction is worth it! 

Share it on social media

It’s okay to express what your grateful for any social media so long as you do it in a genuine way and in a way that sparks positivity! You don’t want to jump around saying how excited you are for a new car but instead discuss how grateful you are that you have a reliable vehicle and how truly grateful you are for that! 

It’s truly awesome when you start feeling grateful first off rather than anger or resentment and here are some quotes to use to remind you why!

Like we had touched on briefly above, being grateful offers you so many benefits! 

Not only will you’re perspective change but you’ll be slow to anger and jealousy. 

Your self-esteem will greatly improve!

You’ll sleep better and become less stressed! These benefits will lead to a healthy body, mind, and spirit. You might even save some money because you’ll find that you don’t need to buy new stuff to be fulfilled.

Another benefit is that you’ll find yourself drawn closer to God. It’s hard not to be filled with awe at God’s greatness when we thank him for what we have. He’s a great God who loves us more than we could understand or express, He simply wants us appreciate that.

First day:

Write down five things that you’re grateful for and be specific! Not just I’m grateful for my house but I’m grateful that my house protects me from the elements.

Second day:

Choose three of grateful affirmations and become using them in your everyday routine.

Third day:

Ask someone close to you to begin surprising you with grateful questions. You can make it more interesting by setting rules like how many things, how specific, or something else totally different!

Fourth day:

Give out four different genuine complements! Try to be specific and not just you look nice today 🙂

Fifth day:

Post about it!
