27 years…I can’t believe that I had my birthday a couple days ago on May 28th.
That in mind, I have a little bit of advice that I would give my younger self!
There are so many thoughts and feelings running through my head right now! When I was younger, all my thoughts essentially ended at 25. That was the only end goal that I had in mind! I figured by then everything that I was envisioning would be a reality and my older, wiser, prettier self would have all the answers and a new vision for the next quarter of life.
I assumed that by this time, I would have a successful career, a husband, my own home, an insane group of friends, and thoughts of babies on the way!
Reality though, I’m not married. The successful career? Well took me ages to even figure out what I wanted to do! I’m still in the same town that I grew up in which was never the plan. I do have my own house though but even that doesn’t look the way that I thought it would.
Does this sound familiar? I bet it does!
So in honor of my birthday and that little girl who had so many dreams for me! Here is a list of things that I would like to tell her or a list of things that I’ve learned in 27 years.
What other people think don’t matter
Their thoughts really don’t mean anything. More often than not, any thought that they do have of you is fleeting before they go back to their own self-absorption. Seriously, just put the blinders on and focus on what you can do to make yourself proud of who you can be.
Don’t let other people guide your future
I get it! You want the advice from those who love you the most and that’s awesome! There is nothing wrong with that but don’t forget to focus on what you really want. Use their guidance to help propel into the future that you see for yourself!
Don’t be afraid to fail
Literally everyone fails!! There’s not a single person who has started at the bottom, made mistakes, and had to start over. You will never know if you love something if you don’t try it first!
It’s a lifestyle
Things are not going to magically fall into your lap. You won’t turn 16 and suddenly find yourself in good shape with perfect hair and skin. The things that you want to achieve are done by hard work and change. Not magic, my dear! As much as we all wish!
There are some people who will ridicule you for the things that you love. Just let that roll off your shoulders! Don’t let them into your life, either. You’ll be so much happier if you just stick to what you love and don’t try to justify why you love certain things. And let me tell you that when you’re true to yourself, the right people will come into your life who will love you for you! Not what you try to force yourself to be.
Obviously these aren’t the only things that I would tell my younger self but these are things that I think all little kids should know as their approaching stages like middle school or older. This stage is so crucial because it’s a time when their starting to interact with a new social order and with trying to figure out how to navigate the new pitfalls, we can lose ourselves in the process.
