Blogging mistakes to avoid? Blogging mistakes at all?? Um, who needs those thrown in our faces, right??
Well I promise that I’m not going to be that mean about! This post is geared toward bloggers that are striving to make blogging become a sustainable income for their house! And I’m not here to say that I haven’t made mistakes or won’t ever make mistakes! Believe me! I’ve made plenty of mistakes blogging and I’m sure that I’m going to make so many more! The point here is that anyone who wants to make money blogging then these might be points that you need to take into consideration! These 7 points are crucial to getting traffic and making money with your blog!
This post may contain affiliate links. This means that if you click on one, I might receive a small commission, which is what helps keep TLM up, and running! I only promote products/services/companies that I use personally and believe in.
Not having a self-hosting domain.
I know that free is amazing! I’m all over free! But when making a blogging business (Don’t fool yourself, blogging is a business!) it’s important to be self-hosted!
But this THE BIGGEST blogging mistakes to avoid! No joke!
Why? Because when you’re self-hosted, you own it! You get to have all the control and thereby you get to make the money! Those other “free” sites are actually the ones that get to use the ads and use your platform as a way to make money! I know! It’s ridiculous! But, alas, that is the way that it is. Now there are a lot of different hosting companies that you can choose from: Bluehost, hostgator, godaddy, and many others but I must recommend Siteground! It’s the one that I personally use and have seen many seasoned bloggers turn to!
I love Siteground! The customer service is amazing! It’s relatively cheap to start with and over time it is the cheapest hosting company to go with.
You can start your own blog for less than $4 a month and get amazing perks! Just go check em out!
Not utilizing Pinterest
I will be besides myself if anyone who has a blog, isn’t using Pinterest!
Let’s just go over Pinterest real quick. Pinterest is an online platform that people use to find inspiration for their lives! There is every niche under the sun on Pinterest! It’s also a huge platform with nearly 300 million active users!
It’s a fantastic visual search engine that wait for it…is FREE!! Yeah that’s right! You can use Pinterest to send traffic your way at no cost to you!
So many bloggers, myself included, get most of our traffic from Pinterest every month! If you’re serious about blogging and using Pinterest then you must get this E-book!
This book is seriously amazing! It literally goes over everything you need to make your Pinterest account, pins, and pinning rock for getting traffic!
The best part? It’s all done with manual pinning so there’s no need to buy a monthly service to help you!
Carly shows you everything that she does to get over 200,000 users to her blog every month!
As for myself, I spend less time actually pinning and have gotten more steady traffic than I ever have. I wouldn’t suggest it to you if I didn’t 100% believe that it’s worth it!
Failing to be consistent
This one is important not only for readers but for your SEO, search engine optimization, which we’ll get into a little later on!
Have you ever gone to a site and think, “this is really good stuff! I’d like to see more.” and realize that the last time the author posted was 6 months ago?
Kind of puts a bad taste in your mouth, right? I mean who wants advice, let alone click on the links, make purchases, or even come back to the site if the author doesn’t stay consistent and show up regularly? It’ll be the same for you and your blog. Now not every posting will be the same for everyone! We’re not all the same and no blog will be the same.
My suggestions for making a posting schedule:
- Make it so that it’s a schedule that you can keep up with.
Don’t set out to post 5 times a week when you really can only keep up with posting twice or even once a week. You’ll get burnt out and stop working! Than all that hard work will be for nothing.
- Use your Google Analytics to figure out when your visitors are most likely on your site.
If you see everyone showing up on Wednesdays are 3 p.m. don’t go posting on Saturdays at 8 a.m. See what I mean?
- Not using an editorial calendar
Following up with posting consistently, the use of an editorial calendar is crucial! An editorial calendar is simply a monthly calendar that you use to schedule with posts that you’re going to write. It sounds simple enough! This has helped my posting immensely! I no longer have to stress about when I’m going to post something and when my calendar is filled out, I don’t have to worry about coming with an idea right on the spot.
Before I would sit and stress about making sure that I was posting enough about all my subjects (personal growth, beauty, and blogging). My posts would come out sloppy and you could totally tell that it was last minute!
Not being SEO optimized
Search engine optimization sounds like a very scary thing but it’s the only way that you’ll get organic traffic! This is fantastic because anyone who clicks on your link was because they searched a keyword that you wrote about and that means that the reader is actively interested! More than likely they will be hanging around to read your whole blog post! Now I can’t fit all SEO tips into this one post but there a couple of things that you can do to instantly improve your SEO!!
Now assuming that you already have a blog, you might be familiar with permalinks but just in case! Permalinks is the address of your blog post! Pretty simple, right? Well in WordPress, you have some options for what your want your address to be, whether it’s the time and date that the post was published, a nonsensical bunch of letters or numbers, or the name of your blog post.
Don’t be fooled! Some people think that having the date and time of your blog is good and it is but only for you. This is a serious blogging mistakes to avoid!
Do yourself a favor and go switch over your permalinks to match the title of your blog post! It’s super easy.
- Go to your dashboard
- Find the settings
- Click on permalinks
- Click on post name
- And save!
Now you’re blog post’s name is able to recognize the blog post and help it search ranking!
- Yoast plugin
The other thing you should do is install the best SEO plugin, Yoast! This is a great plugin that will walk you through how to best optimize your post for SEO! I mean it spells it out for you! What’s easier than that??
Ignoring your email list
I’m having trouble remembering the stat but I know that many bloggers agree that having an email list is vital to making money per month as a blogger!
Because these are people who trusted you enough to give you their email address, you get instant access to possibly thousands of people immediately, dedicated readers who value your opinion and will follow your advice.
If you tell them that this vacuum will change their lives, they are more likely to purchase that vacuum through your link than a visitor to your blog for the first time.
Speaking of! You can join my email list and get updates and exclusive info that only my list gets! Not to mention a TON of blog post ideas!
Not treating your blog as a business
Are you still treating your blog like a hobby or an afterthought?
That will read in your blog! No one is going to want to stay on your blog if you don’t take it seriously! People want advice/suggestions from other real like people who will care about what it is that you have to say! This also falls under the consistency order and creating an email list!
If you want people to take your blog seriously than you must too!
You’re not taking advantage of affiliate marketing
What is affiliate marketing? Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate’s own marketing efforts.
Basically, when you believe in a product and get a special link from said product/service affiliate program and a reader clicks on your link and buys that thing or a different thing, then you get a percentage of the profit!
Literally easy! It’s one of the most common ways that all bloggers make their moolah!
And if you aren’t! Huge blogging mistake! Ranks up there with biggest blogging mistakes to avoid!
While it is easy in a sense there is actually some strategy that needs to go into it!
And they isn’t a better way to learn all the ways than from Michelle’s Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing. I’ve taken her course and see an immense jump in my conversions of click on my affiliates.
Michelle herself makes over $100,000 a month just from affiliates! There is so much amazing stuff in this course. I mean just look:

- Different strategies to use to promote your affiliate products
