I want to congratulate you! Because if you’re reading this then that means that you’ve done something that, in my opinion, is the best thing that you could ever do for yourself! You’ve begun the process of starting a blog, or at the very least you are heavily considering it. Am I right?? And you want that blog to be successful right? Well of course you do! I’ve been at this for a while and there are some things that if I had thought about it, I would’ve done differently. Particularly before I even launched my blog! It sounds crazy but after I started my blog all I was seeing all these different posts about people having tons of email subscribers and getting page views just days after launching their blog. I silently kick myself for not implementing these before!! And they seem so simple.
Choose your niche
Again, this sounds like it should be obvious but if your like me and just chomping at the bit to dive right in; you never thought about it! When I started, I wrote about 7 different topics. Whoa! With so many, it’s difficult to keep with your brand and to plan content without bouncing around! A few weeks afterward I narrowed it down to about 3! Blogging, self-care, and skincare! The best thing is that these topics are wide enough that I can still be flexible and play around a bit. So how do you decide your niche? Try answering these questions:
- What are you passionate about? Like what do you find yourself thinking about most?
- What is something that you can learn more about? Because blogging is about delivering the best information you can to help your readers and more than likely you’ll have to do some research on the topic.
It’s okay to have more than one topic just so long as you don’t overwhelm yourself and lose sight of your brand.
Choose your platform
This is the floor for your little blogging house! It powers your blog and lets it run on the world wide web. I use WordPress. I’ve only seen others use WordPress. In other words, use WordPress! It’s very easy to use. Lots of free goodies to boost the power of your blog! Plus there are lots of videos to help you navigate everything! I haven’t even gotten through them all! No, that’s an exaggeration but there are some seriously good stuff! I’m just trying to make a point lol
Choose your host
This is where your blog is stored so it’s like the walls and ceiling of your house. There are two in particular that are popular in the blogging world, Siteground and Bluehost. I use Siteground and I love it! Check out this post here on why I chose Siteground. Also, if you want to ever make money off of your blog then you’ll need a self-hosting system, don’t forget that! I love the host that I have now and while I never had any trouble with Bluehost, I have heard from others that they can be difficult. Just what I heard!!
Choose your blog name
The most fun and most stressful part! You’ll want to pick something that shows a little personality but also shows something of what your blog is about. Not too long because you want readers to remember who you are! When I was picking out mine, I wanted something that was simple and not confining! I was thinking about originally blogging about books (the not so secret third love of my life 😉 ) and I was going to name it something like books and coffee. Thankfully I didn’t! My life would have been so much harder I did that because:
1. I don’t blog about books!
2. I would’ve had to change my domain name forcing me to pay for another one!
3. Transferring everything to a different name is a pain! Almost never goes the way that you want it to.
4. There is no room for flexibility on topics.
5. It seemed very generic. Not that it’s a bad name but it might’ve gotten mixed up with someone else’s! That is if it wasn’t even taken yet!
Choose your theme
What do you want your site to look like? WordPress offers a TON of great free themes. However, I do recommend that you purchase a theme though because they are more customizable and in my opinion more professional. I mean if you want the part then you have to play the part! It’s that whole fake it till you make it kind of a thing. Plus like I said before, they’re customizable and SSSSOOOO much easier to use! I tried several free ones before making the plunge into a paid one and I ran into all sorts of problems with layouts, colors, getting titles to appear where I wanted them. None of them ever looked good or felt like ME. I personally love the Pipdig link below for finding awesome themes but if you don’t like them, then stalk your fav bloggers and see where they got theirs! You don’t have to have the exact one but it might lead you into a direction for finding the one that fits you the best!
Below are some links to really nice themes:
Now there are about ten more points that I liked you to take a look at! But that makes for a very, very long post! Which is why I created a printable checklist download! It’s super easy to access, all you have to do is put your email in below and I’ll send it straight to your email! Now by doing so, you are agreeing to receive more emails from me. Nothing spammy! Just notifications about new posts and such. Plus if you really want to, you can unsubscribe anytime 😉
Have you started a blog or still thinking about it? Do any of the suggestions work for you? I’d love to hear about it! I’d also love to check out your blog!! Drop me a link in the comments or shoot me an email!
