10 ways to be present this Christmas

ways to be more present this christmas season

So the holidays are among us now! Well they have been a couple now haven’t they? And I’m sure if you’re anything like me than that means planning, shooping, cooking, decorating, and preparing yourself for the long hours being spent around a lot of family! Not that any of these things are bad but they can be stressful and that draws us away from being in the moment with family!

Its easy to get caught up in it all and forget to actually enjoy the things that we’re doing to make everyone so happy right?? That’s why it’s very important to sit yourself down and practice ways to be present. These times can be the best of times. With all of the Christmas trimmings, good food and company, and great Christmas movies theses are the best times to create great memories and you don’t want to miss out on anythin! Or you’ll end up looking back and only thinking of all the trouble that you went through.

So here is a list of a bunch of different stuff that you can do to remain present before and during Christmas!

The days leading up to Christmas

Sit back and enjoy your decorations/lights

Seriosuly! Grab a cup of cocoa and just sit down and bask in the glory of all your hard work! Put on some music and just sit down for at least half an hour! You did good and now it’s time to enjoy them!

Watch Christmas movies

This is a great one to do with the fam around! Put your phone away and everyone’s phone and sit down to watch the movie together. Just enjoy it and focus on the movie instead of that pile of to-dos.

Take an evening walk

This is one my favorite things to do! When it’s snowing so soft and gently and you get to walk around and see all the cool lights that your neighbors have done! Again! Put your cell phone away while your out walking and just focus on the lights and if you’re still having a hard time being present, make a mental list of at least three things you like about each house that’s lit up.

Make a new cocoa or eggnog recipe

My brother and I are planning on making a new batch of eggnog this year combining some recipes that I found online and we’re so excited! We get to spend time together and make a new Christmas memory! Hopefully something good will come out of the kitchen too! This is one of those great ones though because even if it comes out tasting awful! We still had quality time together and will be able to look back on this memory and laugh.

Create lists

Not another to-do list but a list of what your most excited for about Christmas or make a gratitude list of at least three things that you’re thankful for. The point is to remind yourself of all the wonderful things about Christmas!

Christmas day

It’s here! YAY! This is one day that is most important to remain present and it goes by crazy fast!

Start with your first thought

I know that many of us jump up and go right for the gifts but take just a couple minutes to prepare yourself for the day and it starts with your thoughts. I like to purposefully think about these three things:

  • This day is going to be great
  • I will be grateful for whatever I get and not be upset about what I didn’t get
  • This is about family and I will do my best to remain patient with them and have a great attitude
  • No matter what happens I will go with the flow and keep a good attitude even if the schedule falls apart (which happens every single time LOL)

This helps keep me in the right mindset and let go of whatever vision I had had for the day.

Take a look at this post (here)to learn more about mindset.

Use your phone minimally

Okay send some of those merry Christmas texts and a one or two social media posts but remember that the best way to be present is to not have your nose glued to your phone! It is so much better to sit around make your own memories than to watch other people’s.

Hang out in the kitchen

If your house is anything like mine then you know that the heart is the kitchen.

There are so many memories to be made hanging out in the kitchen while cooking is being done, you might even learn something! Or in my case just be happy that it didn’t get burned LOL

Start a new Christmas tradition

I didn’t realize till after I had moved that my family didn’t have as many traditions as other familys seemed to have and it was because of this that I started to implent a few more! Not only does it help me to feel more connected to my family but it makes the day feel more special and drawn out.

So far, we’ve added a christmas breakfast that one person is in charge of that is kept secret till the morning of! And after Christmas dinner, we play a new game! It might be some card game that no one has heard of before or a new board game that someone got for Christmas.

Pray

This one is one that my whole family does together! Just by taking a few minutes to thank God for send his son down for us reminds why we’re all together and praying together is a great way to bond!

10 ways to be more present for Christmas! It can be one of the best times of the year, so just make sure that you enjoy it! So to recap, our ten things:

  • Enjoy your Christmas decorations
